MECO Seals by Woodex Bearing

MECO Seal Type 3MECO Seals are manufactured by Woodex Bearing Co Inc, a valued supplier to FTL Technology for over 20 years.

Renowned for their innovative full-contact, soft-face mechanical shaft seals, MECO seals offer superior sealing for food, beverage and pharmaceutical process and production equipment and machinery.

MECO custom-engineered mechanical shaft seals solve some of the most common and case-specific complex sealing problems the industry has to offer. Tolerating 6.35mm and more of diametric runout, MECO Seals eliminate the problems usually associated with traditional pump seals, mechanical packing and lip seals.

In food and pharmaceutical applications, MECO seals eliminate process contamination and because of their cool-running, prevent thermal damage to sensitive process materials.  On process drying equipment, MECO seals drastically reduced process times due to the seal's effective vacuum performance.  In abrasive media, MECO seals have outstanding performance in comparison to all other seal systems.

The unique features of these patented sealing systems have been implemented successfully by FTL Technology to solve a variety of difficult problems, across a wide variety of processes. For each seal installation, FTL Technology engineers work closely with the customer to make sure the correct seal and materials are specified.

  • Applications
MECO seal offers split and unsplit shaft seals for rotating process machinery including, mixer seals, dryer seals, conveyors seals, extruder seals, blender seals, paper pulper seals as well as seals for explosive environments following European ATEX standards.

MECO models effectively seal dry powders, bulk materials, pastes, slurries, liquids and vapors, including aromatic hydrocarbons. Sanitary models are available for food and pharmaceutical applications along with models for ATEX environments as well as air-free models. Most MECO seal models are manufactured fully-split, permitting installation and rebuilding without bearing or drive removal. These seals are available with FDA-approved materials.
  • Benefits
Benefits of using MECO seals versus old stuffing boxes and packing include:

Safety – reduced danger of dropping heavy stuffing boxes on personnel during routine maintenance or cleaning.

    Productivity – reduced cleaning time.

Harmony – less physical strain on maintenance personnel compared to maintaining a traditional packing gland, stuffing box arrangement.
  • MECO seal configuration
MECO seals operate on a plane perpendicular to the shaft, so there is no relative motion between the shaft and seal. MECO Seals eliminate the shaft abrasion and the high operating temperatures typical of mechanical packing.

Seals are designed using various configurations from each of these categories:

    1 - Drive Mechanisms

2 - Seal Face Material Combinations

3 - Seal Face Loading or Balancing

    4 - Barrier/Quench Controls

These four categories, in conjunction with spatial and operational parameters, are used to form our seal models AH, EA, EP, HB, MP and OFS. These six basic models branch out into many seal types to meet customer's specific needs.

"Prior to working with FTL Technology we struggled to contain leaks on our large ribbon blenders. The OEM provided packed gland seal assemblies were prone to unpredictable, intermittent seal failures causing interruptions in production and issues with maintenance scheduling. FTL Technology provided technical advice and support from the outset and we decided on the Type AH MECO Seal as the most appropriate solution. The seals were much easier to install and maintain than our previous seals, and we are able to monitor the condition of the seals unlike before. Not only that, as they are FDA compliant and suitable for ATEX applications they gave us confidence that they were safe to use with our pharmaceutical products and also safe to use in a potentially explosive atmosphere. The Type AH seals we use are extremely robust and have been able to cope with spikes in operating conditions without any detrimental effect.

We have had several years of carefree running using MECO seals on a variety of mixers and as a result we continue to work with FTL on challenging engineering and maintenance applications as their professional approach and continued support has enabled us to resolve issues and save valuable resources within our maintenance and reliability teams."
